Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP)
Cryptographic Algorithm Validation Program (CAVP)
The CMVP was established by NIST and the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) in July 1995. All of the tests under the CMVP and CAVP are handled by third-party laboratories that are accredited as Cryptographic and Security Testing (CST) laboratories by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP). Vendors interested in conformance testing may select any of the accredited laboratories. The applicable standard is FIPS 140-2, Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules. The associated test methodology is documented in the Derived Test Requirements (DTR) for FIPS 140-2. Algorithm testing of Approved security functions specified in FIPS 140-2 Annexes A, C and D are also performed by the laboratories and validated by the CAVP.
