Today a Federal Register notice announced NIST's intention to sponsor a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) to help the NCCoE address industry's needs most efficiently. When established, this will be the first FFRDC founded by the Department of Commerce and the only one in the nation devoted to cybersecurity. Learn more from the NIST press release.

Yesterday afternoon, U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, Governor Martin O'Malley, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and General Keith Alexander, Director of the National Security Agency, joined the NCCoE and our colleagues for the inaugural signing of National Cybersecurity Excellence Partnerships (NCEP). Patrick Gallagher, Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, served as master of ceremonies for the event.

NCEP is a formal mechanism for partnering with the NCCoE in which a company contributes hardware and software components and shares best cybersecurity practices and personnel with the center to address cybersecurity threats. Eleven companies were celebrated as NCEP participants.

The following individuals participated in the signing ceremony on behalf of their companies:

  • Greg Akers, senior vice president, advanced security initiatives, R&D and product assurance, Cisco Systems Inc.
  • Ned Miller, global chief technology officer of enterprise security products, Hewlett-Packard
  • Hemma Prafullchandra, chief technology officer and senior vice president of HyTrust Inc.

NIST Director Pat Gallagher on Public-Private Partnerships and Cybersecurity

NIST Solicits Views, Ideas from Stakeholders for Cybersecurity Framework for Critical Infrastructure

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) today issued a Request for Information (RFI) in the Federal Register as its first step in the process to develop a Cybersecurity Framework, a set of voluntary standards and best practices to guide industry in reducing cyber risks to the networks and computers that support critical infrastructure vital to the nation's economy, security and daily life. NIST Leaders Part of Federal Cyber Security Panel

Tomorrow at RSA, Donna Dodson, director of the NIST Computer Security Division and acting executive director of the NCCoE, will moderate a panel titled, “PNG-F41 - Administration Cyber Security Priorities for Federal Information Systems.” Panelists include Matthew Scholl, deputy division chief of the NIST Computer Security Division, and

  • Peter Fonash, CTO, Department Of Homeland Security
  • Lawrence Hale, Director, Strategic Solutions and Security Services, General Services Administration
  • Earl Crane, Director for Federal Cybersecurity, Executive Office of the President, National Security Staff

This overview will include discussion of continuous monitoring; trusted internet connection (TIC) capabilities and traffic consolidation; and strong authentication to federal information systems using HSPD-12 personal identity verification (PIV) cards.

The session will take place on March 1, 2013 from 9:00 to 10:00 am in Room 131.


Donna Dodson to Speak on Cyber Roadmap

Donna Dodson, director of the NIST Computer Security Division and acting executive director of the NCCoE, will speak on a distinguished panel at RSA today from 10:40 to 11:40 am titled, “Roadmap Toward a More Secure and Resilient Cyber Ecosystem.” Donna will be joined by

Dr. Pat Gallagher, the director of NIST, will be at the NCCoE’s booth (#250) at RSA from 4:00 to 4:30 pm to meet people, listen to ideas and discuss NIST’s role in the February 12, 2013 Executive Order "Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity." Leadership from the NIST Computer Security Division and key NCCoE staff will join Dr. Gallagher at the booth.

NCCoE at CyberMaryland’s RSA Expo Booth at 2:30 pm

Nate Lesser, the NCCoE deputy director, will be at CyberMaryland’s RSA Expo Booth (#216) from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm to present the center’s 2013 strategy and discuss recent milestones in the Secure Exchange of Electronic Health Information Demonstration Project (HITS). Nate will describe the HITS Use Case for Mobile Devices and talk about how organizations can participate and contribute. He will also take questions.


NCCoE Enjoys a Productive First Day at RSA

Staff from the NCCoE (booth #250) enjoyed a productive first day at the RSA Conference and celebrated an overwhelmingly positive response from executives at private companies, and staff members from academic institutions, government agencies and non-profit groups. NCCoE staff spoke to an array of interested parties and found quite a few prospective collaborators. Staff members from NCCoE also demonstrated a proof of concept for the Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud throughout the day.

Govinfosec: Cybersecurity Center of Excellence Launched

From Govinfosec: "The National Institute of Standards and Technology is establishing the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, a public-private collaboration aimed at accelerating the widespread adoption of integrated cybersecurity tools and technologies. NIST Director Patrick Gallagher, at ceremonies on Feb. 21, said the center would unite 'the best minds and provide them with the best tools to create and test solutions that will make online transactions of all kinds safer.'" NCCoE Launches Project to Secure Health Information

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) invites organizations to participate in a National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) effort to integrate commercially available security technologies with health information systems. Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud Workshop

Yesterday, the center hosted the Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud Workshop to review methods that companies can adopt for cloud computing and similar technologies to harden their security measures. An accompanying draft interagency report 7904 titled, “Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud: Proof of Concept Implementation” provides a blueprint that can be used by the general security community to validate and implement this proof of concept.

Federal Register Notice: Secure Exchange of Electronic Health Information Project

Today, the NCCoE posted a Federal Register notice about the center’s Secure Exchange of Electronic Health Information Demonstration Project. This project will undertake challenges such as the variety of client devices and the range of health care data exchange standards. By addressing and resolving security concerns, the outcomes of this project will help health care providers secure the electronic transfer of health information. Upcoming Event: HIMSS13, New Orleans, LA

1/10/2013

Join NCCoE leadership and keynote speaker, President Bill Clinton, at the upcoming HIMSS13 workshop. The event takes place in New Orleans from March 3-7, 2013, and brings together health care professionals to explore topics affecting the industry, including health information exchange (HIE). The HIE symposium will review HIEs that have progressed post-HITECH and how HIE overlaps with national, state and local health care initiatives. Join the NCCoE for a Workshop: Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud

The NCCoE is collaborating with NIST’s cloud computing experts to enforce geolocation restrictions and secure shared cloud servers. On January 14, 2013, the center will host a workshop to explore hands-on, proof-of-concept implementation designed to address the challenges associated with cloud computing.

National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) Workshop

Yesterday, the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence hosted a workshop to introduce the center, a public-private collaboration for accelerating the widespread adoption of integrated cybersecurity tools and technologies. The center is hosted by NIST in collaboration with the State of Maryland Department of Economic Development and Montgomery County, Maryland.

The workshop brought together experts from industry, government and academia to address present-day cybersecurity challenges, test emerging technologies, and deliver quick and cost-effective solutions. The workshop addressed start operations as well as engaged and solicited feedback from user communities and sectors (health, financial, utility, etc.), government agencies, academia and other organizations. NIST Establishes National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) today announced a new partnership to establish the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, a public-private collaboration for accelerating the widespread adoption of integrated cybersecurity tools and technologies. The State of Maryland and Montgomery County, Md., are co-sponsoring the center with NIST, which will work to strengthen U.S. economic growth by supporting automated and trustworthy e-government and e-commerce.
