FISSEA E-mail List: Rules & Guidance

The FISSEA listserv exists for the purposes of:

  • Sharing resources: You’ve got some outstanding information security awareness, training and educational resources that may benefit others.
  • Providing a venue for requesting assistance: Your organization has a particular challenge with your awareness, training and education program, you need a recommendation for a knowledgeable and trustworthy contractor, or you are looking for advice on a particular security subject.
  • Announcing FISSEA activities: FISSEA sponsors an annual conference, workshops, and publicizes upcoming events that may be of interest to this community.

Please understand this listserv is not moderated! No individual reviews messages you send to the over 800 members. Be careful and considerate of what you send and follow these rules and guidance.

Listserv Basics:

1)   To Post a Message to the FISSEA List: Send your message to fissea@nist.gov

Only people who have been subscribed (added) to the list by Peggy Himes or Mark Wilson (NIST Liaison) can post messages to the List.

Note: Sending a message to the List only works if it’s sent from the address you provided when you joined FISSEA. If you want to be able to send messages to the list from a different account (e.g., your home account), contact Peggy at fisseamembership@nist.gov .

2)   To Unsubscribe from the List: Send a message to: fisseamembership@nist.gov

Don’t send messages to the listserv asking to be removed—this is a serious breach of etiquette and unnecessarily adds to the busy inboxes of the more than 800 members.

3)   Replying to a message? Think about the following:

  • Replying to the sender—not the entire List?—Don’t select “Reply to All”
  • Only select “Reply to All” if your message is of value to many of the members.
  • Never send a “Me Too” message—consider a direct reply to the sender.

4)   No Attachments: The listserv is not set up accommodate attachments.

If you mention a resource file and folks request a copy, e-mail it directly to them. If there is sufficient interest in the material you are developing, send it to Peggy or myself and we will post it on the NIST Awareness, Training, and Education (ATE) pages of our Computer Security Resource Center (CSRC) - http://csrc.nist.gov/ATE/ .

Note: If you send a file to the list—you get one reminder. Send a second—and we will remove you from the list.

5)   No Advertisements: The FISSEA listserv is not a venue for vendor advertisements.

If a member is asking for help in creating awareness or training material, vendors on the list may reply directly to the member--but not to the list.

Please use caution: If you reply to a query sent to the list (asking for sources of training or material, for example), ensure that your reply is not a thinly veiled ad. Avoid this possibility by replying directly to the individual who is asking for assistance—not to the List. Again, if you send such an ad to the list—you get one reminder. Send a second—and you are no longer allowed to send to the listserv (you would remain a FISSEA member, but would not be on the membership's e-mail list).

Note: Providers of awareness, training, and education material and related services may have their company or school listed on the CSRC website, on the appropriate awareness, training, education (ATE), and professional development page(s). If your business or school wants to be added to the ATE pages, let me know. The ATE pages are located at: http://csrc.nist.gov/ATE .

Within reason, we will mention upcoming events on the CSRC Events page at: http://csrc.nist.gov/events/

Thanks in advance for following our rules and guidance. Enjoy your list!

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
