  The means used to confirm the identity of a user, process, or device (e.g., user password or token).

  A network entity that executes access authentication protocols with the entity that requests access to a network. An authenticator may use an EAP server to conduct authentication operations. In wireless access networks, an authenticator may be collocated with a Point of Attachment (PoA).
