National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Working Group

The NICE Working Group (NICEWG) has been established to provide a mechanism in which public and private sector participants can develop concepts, design strategies, and pursue actions that advance cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development.

Structure and Leadership

The NICE Working Group is led by three co-chairs, each representing Academia, Private Industry, or Government. The current co-chairs are:
       Academic: Kathi Hiyane-Brown, President of Whatcom Community College
       Industry: Andre Thornton, Founder and CEO of Whitman Consultingn
       Government: Rodney Petersen, Director of NICE at the National Institute of Standards and Technology

The NICE Working Group is comprised of five sub-working groups. Each subgroup meets independent of the NICEWG and reports out at the NICEWG Meetings. The subgroups are:

  • K-12
  • Collegiate
  • Competitions
  • Training and Certifications
  • Workforce Management

Meeting Information

The NICE Working Group meets via teleconference every fourth Wednesday of the month from 3:30PM – 5:00PM Eastern Time.

CollegiateFocuses on topics pertaining to the burgeoning Information Security discipline, including guiding curricular standards, aligning academic pathways to the National Cybersecurity Workforce Framework job roles, and stimulating the development of approaches and techniques that can more rapidly increase the supply of qualified cybersecurity workersEmail nicewg.collegiate@nist.gov with the subject line: “Collegiate Subscribe”, and with your full name and email address in the body of the message.
CompetitionsFocuses on topics pertaining to increasing and strengthening the cadre of cybersecurity professionals and connecting cybersecurity employees and employers. Training and CertificationFocuses on topics pertaining to the development and management of performance-based evaluation and training programs, capable of adapting to meet the nation's evolving cybersecurity needs. Workforce ManagementFocuses on facilitating, developing, and promoting cybersecurity workforce management guidance and measurement approaches that create a culture where the workforce is managed and engaged to effectively address the cybersecurity risks of their organization.Email nicewg.wm@nist.gov with the subject line: “Workforce Management Subscribe”, and with your full name and email address in the body of the message.
