For many industrial control systems (ICS), it is unacceptable to degrade performance even for the sake of security. As a result, many organizations such as small and medium-size manufacturers (SMMs) may have difficulty with understanding how to implement cybersecurity standards in ICS environments. A concern of many SMMs is that cybersecurity implementations could have a negative impact on the operation of their manufacturing systems.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has recently released two publications to assist SMMs with developing and deploying cybersecurity programs for their manufacturing systems, NISTIR 8183 Rev. 1, "Cybersecurity Framework Version 1.1 Manufacturing Profile" and NISTIR 8183A (3 volumes), "Cybersecurity Framework Manufacturing Profile Low Impact Level Example Implementation Guide."
