The CommerceNet Consortium, a coalition of organizations based in Silicon Valley, has recently created CommerceNet, an Internet-based infrastructure for electronic commerce. The CommerceNet Consortium is a non-profit corporation operating under matching funds provided by the Technology Reinvestment Program (TRP) sponsored by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), NIST, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DoE), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). CommerceNet participants include Intel, Sun Microsystems, Pacific Bell, and Apple Computer. The goal of CommerceNet is to create a true electronic marketplace.
