This bulletin summarizes the recommendations developed by NIST to assist organizations in establishing and maintaining robust security for wireless local area networks (WLAN) using the new security features that were developed for IEEE 802.11i. Topics covered in the bulletin include a description of the contents and the appendices of the guideline; the family of voluntary industry standards developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to define the characteristics, the transmission of data, and the security of wireless local area networks; previous NIST guidelines that discuss the security of wireless handheld devices such as text messaging devices, PDAs, and cell phones; NIST's recommendations to organizations on improving the security of their wireless networks, and adopting the IEEE 802.11i specifications for their wireless network implementations.
