Operational Technology Backup Quick Start Guide | NIST Special Publication (SP) 1339
June 17, 2026

The NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has published NIST Special Publication (SP) 1339, Operational Technology Backup Quick Start Guide. This two-page resource provides an overview of cybersecurity considerations to help operators and manufacturers develop an effective backup strategy for their OT environment.

Having a reliable OT backup strategy is vital for recovering from cyberattacks and system failures. In OT environments, backup failures can have severe consequences, including extended production downtime, financial losses, and safety incidents. To mitigate these risks, this two-pager outlines key backup management priorities for an OT environment including integrating backups into the change management process, creating backups regularly, testing them, and reviewing them during recovery exercises.

The Value of a Quick Read

We’re excited to offer this concise, two-page guide. It’s designed to be a quick and easy read, providing you with the essential information to develop an effective OT backup management strategy.

Visit the NCCoE project page to access more resources to assist your organization in securing OT systems. If you have ideas for future guides or topics you’d like to see covered, email the NCCoE team at [email protected].
